Yup. Create a boss. Give them a strategy, backstory, etc.
Here's a few I did in the past:
-Ghina (pronounced gi-nah) Sacarin-
Bestiary: Long time rival of Dracula's. Possesses control over memories.
Description: Ghina is a vampire with his eye on the title of "King of the Vampires". Ambitious, sometimes reckless, but possessing incredible power, he can turn his opponent's memories against them, calling up images of people he or his opponent has met, places they have been, and wounds they have suffered, and using them to defeat his foes.
Intro: The player rushes through a door, and suddenly, he's in the entrance hall of the castle! The entrance hall changes to the area after it before the player's eyes, and suddenly a person from his past appears, telling the player to turn back. The player sees through the farce, and Ghina appears, holding a black sphere in his left hand. "isn't it amazing?" he asks, "the power of human perception? Unfortunately for you, Dracula is MY prey. By killing him, I will be able to use this Castle's memories of him to control it, making me the Dark Lord. But in order to do that, he must be slain by MY hand. I cannot allow you to interfere! DIE!"
Arena changes during the battle to large chambers the player has already been through
Battle: Uses sword in close combat, but prefers to keep his distance, calling up images of past Castlevania heros and villains to defeat the player for him. Each image has their basic attack and 3 or so signature moves from their previous games available to them (i.e; Richter Belmont would have his whip swing, Triple Dagger, Grand Cross, and Hydro Storm; Juste Belmont would have his whip swing, Ice Cross familiar, Fire serpent spell, and Aquarius Summon, etc. all). After taking a few hits, each image would die and Ghina would be stunned just long enough for the player to manuever over to him and strike him approximately 1-3 times (depending on how close Ghina was when the image was defeated. Defeating all images leaves Ghina no choice but to fight with his rapier and the 5 traditional Castlevania subweapons (including the stop watch, which funtions like it did in Castlevania: Dracula X)
Images Ghina can summon:
Alucard (Symphony of the Night) Juste Belmont Richter Belmont (Symphony of the Night) Simon Belmont (Castlevania Judgement) Dracula (Castlevania 3) Death (Lament of Innocence) supporting cast of the current game Medusa (Lament of Innocence) Minotaur (Curse of Darkness) Werewolf (Portrait of Ruin)
Naturally, each image will have it's difficulty and AI adjusted as they are not actually the original, and merely how Ghina remembers them, so they will be easier (when applicable) than their original incarnations. Keep in mind, this is for a 3D game.
Defeat: "CURSES!!!" Ghina screams, falling to his knees, "THAT THRONE WAS TO BE MINE!!!", before crumbling into dust, revealing his bare skeleton (skull has fangs), which then crumbles into powder.
*notes* I thought Joachim was an awesome villain, where both the hero and a particular villain have the same enemy, but a difference of ideals keeps them from being allies. Also, fanservice of this level is undeniably awesome!
Name: Tobias Description: A man who blames the Belmonts for the death of his wife
History: Tobias was a simple farmer in 1545, when his wife, Aleena, became a vampire at the hands of Dracula. Tobias was determined to save her soul though, and invited her into his house again. Even with her humanity rapidly draining away, the couple was still in love. Tobias ensured that Aleena never fed off of any other humans, save himself, which left him in a somewhat weakened condition for an extended period. Belmont beleived Tobais was suffering at the hands of some monster, and slew Aleena to save the "victim", which caused Tobias to snap. He swore vengeance, and set about restoring Dracula's castle with the aid of Lynos, the Werewolf King. If he could revive Dracula, surely the Dark Lord could bring his beloved back to him!
Tobias attacks with a very monkey like style of hand to hand techniques. He is fast and difficult to hit, and after each attack, will disappear offscreen. This is when he is vulnerable. His position will be given away by a Joker-like laugh; whip at the source of the noise to knock him onsreen, where you can follow up with 2-3 additional hits. After you deplete his health, he lets out a primal scream and transforms into a demonic mosnter with two giant hands growing out of his back. he can extend them from his back with large arms to squeeze the life out of you, and pummel you. In this form, he also has the cliche fire breathing and teleportation moves.
As he dies, Aleena's spirit appears to him and him alone (and as such is invisible to the player), and he dies with a contented sigh.
Name: Lynos, the Werewolf King Description: Lord of the Werewolves, and he has an eye on Dracula's throne. History: Lynos agreed to help Tobias restore Dracula, but for a different reason than the farmer believed. Lynos planned to kill Dracula and take the title of Dark Lord for himself. Bad enough that he wasn't ALREADY the Dark Lord, but to have a mere vampire sit on the throne was infuriating for Lynos. After all those years of looking up at Dracula from below, their positions would have at last been switched, and Dracula would have been the servant! But alas, thanks to Belmont's efforts, Dracula was slain, and Lynos' plans were ruined, and he is NOT happy about it.
The Stage: Amid the crumbled remains of Castlevania, in the Smashed entrance hall, the final battle takes place!
Lynos is initailly in his human form, and fights with a lance. He has some typical moves (slash, stab, etc.), but if you wait to defeat him (3 minutes), the full moon becomes visible through the shattered ceiling, and he transforms into a werewolf (this form is very huge, with his head coming just short of the ceiling, but is still incredibly quick). This phase of the battle is much more difficult, with his claw swipes, bites, kicks, and headbutts all being quick and very powerful. He can summon wolves to aid him, as well as has a number of moves that hearken to Rondo's Werewolf boss fight. He can also grab nearby rubble and hurl it at Belmont as a missile attack.
Killing him ends the game.
Here's a new one:
-Spalatin-
Bestiary: Once heir to the Hunter's Legacy, ambition and jealousy turned him down the path of madness.
Backstory: Once the presumed heir to the Belmont Clan's whip, Spalatin was ultimately rejected as the whip's bearer due to a strong lust for power, and his brother Luther was chosen instead. Driven mad with jealousy, Spalatin sought out Mathais Cronqvist, the former friend of Spalatin's grandfather, Leon Belmont, and became his vampiric servant in an effort to obtain power greater than any his clan could wield. In the end, he slew almost all of his family, save for Luther and his cousin Gregor, who escaped to fight another day. Thanks to Spalatin's Belmont heritage and madness, Luther and Gregor were exiled from Transylvania and the Belmonts would not meet Dracula until the day Trevor Belmont set foot in Transylvania centuries later.
Intro: The player runs through the boss door to enter a large, gothic chamber, where Spalatin sits at a table, drinking a cup of wine (or possibly blood). Spalatin seems quite calm, though he is obviously aware of this intruder's presence. He stands, and offers a seat to his foe. The player character hurls a dagger at Spalatin, which shatters his glass. Spalatin laughs, and reveals that he too has a whip (made of the spines of vampire hunters), and with a single swing, destroys the table.
Spalatin can float about the room, dropping skulls that do damage and inflict curse status, breathe a poisonous fume cloud, hurl fireballs, and attack with his whip, while also having corrupted versions of the traditional Belmont subweapons; an acid vial that also poisons, a bone boomerang, throwing sickles, bone stakes, and the stopwatch.
When his HP is depleted, he uses Soul Steal on the castle itself to draw the dark powers of chaos into his own body and grows into a black werewolf-like demon with giant wings wearing gold armor of enormous size. In this form, he can crush the player underfoot, breathe fire, grab the player and start eating them, and also kick, slash, and other melee moves.
When slain, he transforms back into his human form and says: "You're... a cut above.." but dies before he can finish his sentence, and when he dies, his body explodes into a swarm of bats.
[EDIT]
Spalatin's opening is indeed a Olrox reference, just to get that out there.
