Before I begin, I would like to state for the record that I do not actually hold stock in this hypothesis of mine and I am merely posting it for the sake of discussion.
Last night, I was RPing and I have this character named Xanadaeon, who is a fragment of God basically, giving him great power and intelligence. His goal is to unite with the other fragments and become whole again, and become God once more.
And as I was getting really into his dialog, I started thinking about whether the myriad Gods of the ancient world were all in fact originated from a single being, but as faith split into fragments, so did the original. With each split of religion, the original being lost another fragment which became a different god of the ancient world. What is left of the original then would obviously seek to reunite itself and become complete again, hence it sending out prophets and conducting miracles in order to sway others back to the original real deal, so it could gather the shards and reconstruct them back into what it once was. As it nears completion, it would not need to do as much of the recruiting first hand anymore, having honest believers willing to accept the true original on the merits of the argument without needing physical proof.
The fragments would have been enjoying their own defined "self-existence" though, and would have likely fought back with whatever power they had left in order to preserve that individuality, leading to conflicts such as the battle of faith and gods presented in the Book of Exodus where God challenges the gods of Egypt.
I call this the"Broken God" Theory.
Discuss. It should be interesting to see where this heads.

*Is proudly Christian*
That said, I think this is a very interesting idea. You should write a novel off of this or something. It sounds like a credible mythology, but there's not a whole lot to discuss, is there?

But the important thing is that the old topics were given a proper funeral, and many of the younger topics were in attendance. Tears were shed, handkerchiefs were soaked, and the priest gave an eloquent eulogy. Also, the child boards were counted among the dearly departed, as they were not fed enough and thus I gave them an assisted suicide to end their suffering.

Alec, may I turn this into a script for my semester final? It sounds like it would make a great story!

I'd have to say that I'm proudly atheist. In other words, in my adept eyes there is no validity to this theory. It's nothing but amusing speculation as to why there are a multitude of God's; which isn't really a subject that needs to be speculated on.
